The Education & Life Training Center (ELTC), a local non-profit that provides quality, affordable job-skills training and literacy classes for the Northern Coloradocommunity, is excited to announce Helen Thorpe as the keynote speaker at their second annual fundraising event, Word Play Literacy Theater 2012. The event will be held February 9 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Drake Centre. Desserts and beverages will be provided.
Meet and talk with Helen Thorpe during her presentation and book signing. Thorpe, wife of Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, works as a freelance journalist, author, and story writer. Devoted to her passion for writing, she published her first book, Just Like Us. Thorpe”™s book describes the lives of four Mexican girls who all seek the “American Dream,”¯ but only two have legal documentation. This stunning work of in-depth journalism defines the battle of immigration status and the power of legal limitations. The book won the 2010 Colorado Book Award for Creative Nonfiction and was selected as Carbondale's 2011 One Book, One Town title. Thorpe believes in the power of non-traditional education and its impact in the community. Signed copies of Just Like Us will be available for purchase at the event.
For more than 40 years, ELTC has continued to evolve, taking great pride in meeting the changing needs ofNorthernColoradocitizens and the workforce. ELTC”™s most recent launch includes the Larimer County Circles Initiative, which is a combination of community education and relationship-building to support families in their transition out of poverty. ELTC strives to make meaningful and measurable improvements for low-income individuals and families seeking to improve their livelihood and achieve self-sufficiency. By contributing to an individual”™s growth and vitality, ELTC works to strengthen the community and its social capital.
