Poudre School District (PSD) in collaboration with the Sustainable Living Association presents Future Friday on September 16th. Future Friday, now in its third year, is a day dedicated to Sustainability topics and concepts for all students from Fort Collins area schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
The theme of Future Friday this year is "Food Matters". The PSD Child Nutrition Department will feature several seasonal local and organic produce items on salad and fresh bars in all cafeterias throughout the district. There will be 'from scratch' items available throughout the week and on Future Friday as well. Labels will signify the fresh, local and from scratch items and the posters urge students to choose those items.
High School Environmental Club students, Parent Nutrition Advocates, local farmers and other regional sustainability experts will be visiting various schools and classrooms to discuss food system topics such as: healthy eating, Farm to School, food justice and volunteering opportunities, and local food systems.
Alec Loorz, 17-year-old founder of Kids vs Global Warming and the iMatter March will be speaking at Poudre High School auditorium between 12:00pm-1:30pm, in conjunction with Alliance For Climate Education.
This one-day program highlights how essential food is in our lives. How every facet of human existence is touched by food and its production. Every child must eat, so food is an excellent way to teach sustainability. Future Friday is also a great opportunity for PSD to showcase its efforts toward more wholesome, fresh, local and healthy food in school cafeterias.
